Population explosion

Medical advances is one the greatest merits of science and at the same time it is one of the worst demerits of technology. This ambivalence majorly arises from the increase in population. Previously, birth rates were countered by equal death rates but due to improved living standards and advancement of medical science, the case is different now. The increased life expectancy, low infant mortality rates along with the ever increasing birth rates have compounded to population explosions in the world.

To illustrate it further, the population of world has already reached to 7 billion and is expected to be 10 billion in less than 40 years. This is a threatening level to the successful action of societies and its members. The major reasons of population explosion are already stated but others may include the ignorant behavior of people and lack of government’s will to control population. In poor countries another hurdle is child labor as more children are taken as more sources of income.

The direness of matter can be explained by the famous Malthusian theory. According to which the means of subsistence grow in the arithmetic manner (1,2,3.4….) and population increases in geometric manner(1.2.4.16…..). Additional factor in that theory is that beyond a limit there will be natural checks on population like floods, earthquakes and disasters. Overpopulation has resulted in shortage of food, scarcity of resources, and dense population systems. It is leading us towards the poor living standards, high crime rates, poor sanitary conditions, and decrease in arable land.

The root causes for overpopulation are multifaceted and complex. And hence the solution lies in equal composite actions taken today. The birth rates have to be curtailed by direct mass awareness campaigns and strict policies to limit the number of child. Today’s pledge can lead to a prosperous and profuse future.
