Respected Sir / Madam,

I joined this school CAA Model school 4 in the year 1993 when i was in class 3 and Madam Dilara was our principal, we had to switch schools because my we had changed our house and this was the nearest of the affordable schools that we could go to.Coming from one of the Army operated schools i was in a habit of seeing professional yet polite teachers and healthy minded friendly classmates, but that illusion got broken very quickly as soon as i stepped into this Godforsaken school,
First Day:
The very first day when we entered school, my mom came along to basically guide us to the classes and maybe meet the teacher, but the bitter surprise that was waiting for us in the blobby shape of Ms Dilara stopped us right at the office entrance and said “Ye time hai apkay anay ka?!! school to shuru ho chuka hai, wapis jaiyay or kal subha assembly se pahlay chor kar jaeay ga apnay bachay”… she did not know us, kids 7 to 10 years old who just got admitted to her school, feeling very anxious and scared, this was the first thing we got to listen to, she was surrounded by vice principal
Second Day:
After that “pleasant” first day we had our expectations where they should’ve been, right at the bottom, so the second day started and we were taken to the class by the vice principal who just left me at the door and told me to sit down anywhere where there is space as the whole class is out for assembly and will be back soon, she didn’t bother staying back to introduce me to the class, or maybe the class teacher, so here i was sitting in the middle of an empty class waiting for the new classmates to come, not knowing what the response would be. I was an extremely shy kid for whom even a roll call was enough to send a chill down my spine and here i was facing the class of extremely unfriendly children, so the kids rushed in and found me sitting in the middle, they all looked at me like earthlings would look at some little green alien who doesn’t belong to their class.
the class teacher came in and asked me what my name was as she wasn’t told that I’d be joining her class (surprise surprise), the rest of the day followed by extremely uncomfortable situations where every teacher came in and asked who I was and showed his/her disappointment on me not having the classwork copy not up to date………….. towards the end of the first day i thought i was being punished to join this school.
Days After:
I got my first physical abuse in the shape of a very very hard face slap on the third day of my school, when the Quran teacher came for his class (ah the irony), this Quran teacher whom everyone called “Moulana Sahb” was a grey haired and bearded man with a Topi on his head and a bifocal on his nose, as soon as he entered the class I could see there was an urgency and a stress on the faces of my classmates, i found out later that the Moulana Sahb was notoriously known as one of the most ruthless teachers of our beloved school,
so the Moulana Sahb’s routine was that he used to come in and ask the children to line up and read the “Sabaq” that he gave them in last class, all the kids used to go and recite the Sabaq, very few used to get away without any beating as he used to beat kids so ruthlessly that kids used to start crying even during their Sabaq recitation, i have never seen anyone beating the kids like he used to, I saw countless kids on their turn used to start crying instead of reciting because probably their nerves gave out.
so on my first encounter with Moulana sahb i went up, confident because i knew how to read Quran and was feeling confident that this shouldn’t be hard, as I put my Quran book in front of him and started, he suddenly stopped me, and turned to the previous page, then another, and not seeing any of his signatures on the pages (i later found out that you needed to get the page signed by Moulana Sahb once you successfully do the sabaq in front of him) instead of asking me if i was a new student, or what my story was, he asked me “Pichla Sign kiun nai hai Hazrat??!” smiling sarcastically and devilishly as if proud that he caught a very big fraud about to happen….. me being the naive kid, thought this is a friendly smile, and tried to smile and tell him that im a new student,.. but before i could utter those words the hardesttt slap of my life came to my face that made me fell over with moulana sahb yelling “hansta hai… beghairat hansta hai” i had whistles in my ears, i didn’t know what i have or haven’t done to deserve this, how was i supposed to get the previous signatures if this was my first class. the whole class(mostly girls) was laughing (i will never understand why) and some of the girls told moulana sahb “Moulana sahb ye new admission bacha hai” … no that moulana sahb looked at me and said “naya hai?!!! to batata kiun nai”
You’d probably be thinking that beating was the worst thing about this Moulana sahb character, but no, the thing that boys of the class feared the most was that moulana sahb, upon getting too much upset on some male kid, used to say “Tu aisay nahin samjhe ga… tujhay nanga karna parega”….. followed by a very painful struggle between moulana sahb pulling and pushing the kid’s pants as if he wants to take them off, and the kid, crying, yelling and saying sorry for whatever he has done… this was all done with about 40 students in the class of which half were girls, although moulana sahb never really took anyone’s pants off in real, but the psychological effects of this exercise, the ridicule that the kid must’ve felt…..
The second beating i got was on the fourth day, when the social studies teacher came in her name was Ms Tella, she had a face filled with slutty makeup and a very very bad attitude and probably anger issues.
I knew by that day that the copies and all the homework needs to be checked and signed very regularly by all teachers (thanks to pious Moulana sahb).. so when she came in and sat on her deski went to her, showed her my classwork copy and said, Ma’am check my copy please, and the reply……….. a huge slap on my face, then she asked me “kia din hai aj??” , puzzled i kept on looking at her without replying… she said , yelling now “KIA DIN HAI AJJJJ??”… i couldn’t understand what the day as to do with my copy checking…. then she looked at the class and yelled.. “Isko batao kia din hai aj”, everybody in a robotic voice replied “Book reading day miss”… then she looked at me and said “book reading k din copy check hoti hai??!!” a few kids replied “no miss, copy checking k din copy check hoti hai”.. thats when i realized that i have broken yet another rule that i didn’t know of that first 3 days were book reading days of the week and last two days were copy checking days.
Days kept passing by, my parents were dealing with a lot of financial and domestic issues that had followed us after the house move, so the school issue sort of got in the background after a few days, as me and my siblings stopped complaining about the school,
after reaching the senior grades i got to know that the school had gone Semi Govt from Private and so there were a lot of teachers employed there who were just the wives, brothers, sisters, daughters of some corrupt employee of Civil Aviation at a relatively higher post, which also explained the mix of children where some kids belonged to respectable and educated families who got the admission after giving a test and an interview and the remaining got in without any test because again they were related to some employee in CAA.
This school had a proper culture of treating kids like some sort of dirty laundry, where every teacher wanted us to behave and act the way they want without respecting anything that we felt or had to say, they didn’t know about us, our families, our personalities, a couple of times i saw some teachers mocking and degrading the children if they ask them questions during the break time. I remember there was this kid in our class who was 5 or 6 years older than us, he was still in the class because he just couldn’t pass the exams, he probably had a learning disability or maybe something else, all the kids felt it but not our dear teachers, every teacher would come in and look at him like he was an unwanted piece of trash and would ridicule him on being so bad at studies, there was no end to it, i never saw a single teacher treating him with love and trying to know what his problem was, he was just a “Nikamma” for them, teachers used to say very proudly “This boy is in this class for the past 5 years” .. and would only smile embarrassingly.
The abusive culture was so common that this one time after the school was off, me with few of my friends were waiting for our school bus, and so we started playing in the class, some of the kids while running jumped up on the desks and started hoping from one desk to another, suddenly we saw the school peon come in with a stick in his hand, lined us up, and smacked our hands red with that stick, a few of us started crying but he wouldn’t stop,…. YES, the PEON.
We also got a chance to study Sindhi language by yet again a very ruthless and illiterate Sindhi teacher who would just make us repeat what he says while reading the text book, and then make us copy from the board the Q and As… and then whole copy checking cycle like every other class, I didn’t learn a single word of Sindhi in my years in that school.
I can go on many more pages on this utter filth of a school, maybe after all these years the school has improved (i hope) ,but i hold Ms Dilara Talat as most responsible for destroying all the lives of thousands of kids as all this was happening with her permission and under her management, and all the teachers for either doing all those shamefully brutal things or keeping quiet even when they knew what a hell hole this school is for young minds.
I would conclude this by telling you about the most painful true experience of meeting one of my primary school mates from CAA Model School 4 at Karachi Airport, i was about to catch a flight when i saw him, he was wiping the airport floor with his broom in the light blue Civil Aviation uniform.
